About Clare

‘The design industry’s best kept secret…utterly charming and individual.’ The Independent

Derbyshire-based artist Clare Gage has celebrated her life-long love of textiles with ceramics by creating a truly unique collection of porcelain and jewellery.

The beginnings of Clare’s unique style and this collection goes back to Clare’s time as a student at the University of Cumbria, where she achieved a First in Contemporary Applied Arts, Ceramics & Textiles. It was here that she discovered a love for weaving which was combined with a childhood passion for ceramics to create her very first cup collection.

It was this very first collection that resulted in Clare being awarded the 2007 Design Directions: Ceramic Futures Award for her textiles inspired ceramics and was the beginning of the Clare Gage story.

Today, all Clare’s designs start life as fabric pieces hand woven by her and transformed into bespoke moulds which are used to create inspiring porcelain versions of the textile pieces. Learn more about how Clare creates each piece by hand here.

Many of the moulds Clare now uses have been made by professional mould makers in Stoke on Trent. This development was funded by a prestigious grant from the Arts Council to sustain the range and continue the large public engagement with Clare’s designs.

Clare is respected in the world of design, having won numerous awards for her work and, most recently, was invited to be a Fellow of Design Factory, the leading creative development agency in the East Midlands.
